A few years ago, I was having some close friends over for 'ladies night' and decided to whip up a new recipe I saw for lavender honey cupcakes, which were a big hit. They not only tasted like heaven, but also smelled divine! The combo of soothing lavender and healing honey sent me reeling; I then made everything 'lavender honey': iced tea, biscuits, butter--you name it.
Cut to six months later: I was trying to think of what to make for Christmas presents to send to my girlfriends across the US. After discovering how to make body scrubs, I came up with a lavender honey sugar scrub, and I got so much positive feedback that I decided to try my hand at body butters.
I wanted to keep it simple, mainly because I was tired of using products with ingredients I could not pronounce or worse, products that were actually toxic with negative effects on my hormones. I was also tired of paying so much money for "all-natural" products that 1) didn't work, or 2) still somehow irritated my skin. So, I researched ingredients that were not only effective, but also completely natural and organic. Having tried organic shea butter at a recent farmer's market and loving it, I ordered a batch of organic, unrefined, ivory African shea butter and dove into the chemistry of making moisturizers. From there, I worked, reworked, and reworked countless recipes to get the consistency of 'whipped' body butter just right. Man, my kitchen smelled good! When I finally found perfection--a body butter with a light texture so it didn't leave an oily residue, but dense enough to truly moisturize dry, scaly skin--I was so excited that I bottled it all up and gave one to every friend I knew.
It started as a simple baking recipe, developed into a great passion project, and resulted in a growing business, as people from across the country--and even worldwide--tell me they've never seen their skin this healthy. And of course, they also add, "It smells heavenly too!" To which I reply, "I know!" It's that lavender honey...
