I am very passionate about living healthfully--from eating the right foods, to finding alternative remedies for illnesses. And yet, my path to holistic health hasn't always been smooth.
In college, I binged on "fat-free" foods, assuming all fat was unhealthy. Little did I know, I was shoving chemicals into my body and keeping out all the "good fats." As a result, I was often plagued with perpetual migraines and sinus infections, until my sister and her husband got me hooked on a morning green juice.
Frustrated with my health, I began reading the ingredients in everything I bought, including my beauty products. I started cooking with olive oil, instead of cooking spray; used real butter instead of margarine; and drank whole milk, instead of skim. I threw away all my shampoos and lotions that contained parabens, sulfates, and petroleum, and sought out all natural products. Then, after watching Food, Inc., I pledged to only purchase animal products from humane farming companies. Many years later, I feel healthier at 37 than I did when I was 24.
While it's not always easy to be holistically healthy, these 7 DAILY MUST-HAVE's keep me on track:
Greens 8000: As I mentioned, my sister and her husband got me started on a daily green juice about 10 years ago. At the time, I was suffering from monthly sinus infections and bad IBS, not realizing that I was still ingesting so many chemicals from "low fat" food and killing my immune system. In only three months, my stomach aches and sinus infections were gone. Greens 8000 "includes organic green plants, flax lignans, ionic trace minerals, healthy herbs and spices, natural food concentrates, and antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables." I mix them with some beet juice and water every morning before breakfast. It's a great way to start the day with more than enough of the recommended daily dose of fruits and veggies.
Garden of Life Primal Defense Probiotic Formula: I got started on probiotics about two years ago after one of my life coaching client's parents described the important connection between gut health and your immune system, which in turn, affects your mental health. I mix a teaspoon of this powder in with my Greens 8000 every morning. I truly believe it is because of my morning dose of greens and probiotics that I rarely get sick, and if I do, I recover very quickly. Here's to immune health!
Bamboo Paper Towels: I mainly use cloth napkins and fabric hand towels, but when there's dog throw up or other lovely messes to dispose of, I'd rather use paper towels. So, I found bamboo towels a few months ago, and I have to say, they feel just like those thick Viva paper towels. Made from a sustainable natural resource, these towels replace almost 6 months of paper towel rolls, and you can throw them in the wash and reuse them if you want.
Matimati Bamboo Baby Washcloths: Speaking of bamboo, I use these washcloths to remove makeup and wash my face, instead of make-up remover wipes, thus saving water and paper. I will definitely be replacing all of my washcloths for these. They are small, SUPER soft, chemical free, and very eco-friendly.
Veri Organic Soda: I can't believe I ever drank diet soda now that I know what artificial flavors and sweeteners do to my body. Yuck! While I mainly drink water and green tea, I still enjoy a refreshing soda in the evenings, and thank goodness I found Veri Organic Soda at my local Ralph's grocery store. "With no artificial colors, no artificial aromas, no artificial flavoring, and no artificial sweeteners," this soda tastes amazing and doesn't kill your waistline. I especially like the ginger ale, but my BF prefers the orange soda (he says it taste even better than Fanta!).
RxCandles: What gal doesn't love candles? For years I have been searching for candles that smell great, but don't emit toxic fumes into my home. Along the way, I found a few that were eco-friendly, but ultimately never really smelled very strong. I even tried making my own beeswax candles--um, disaster. So, when I stumbled on RxCandles at the Melrose Trading Post Flea Market a few Sundays ago, I was so excited! I sniffed every one of their numerous scents and was sold. I bought Homme and Blush, and let me tell you, the scents are fragrant, the design is simple, and the emission is clean. Best of all, they are very reasonably priced. I especially love the story behind this company--so much so, that we will be featuring the owners of RxCandles, Jennifer and Jocelyn, in our monthly feature blog, Be-Ology. Stay tuned in September!
Dogswell Live Free Dog Food: If I'm concious about what I put in my body, then I am hyper concious about what my dogs eat. Our fur babies deserve the best! And Dogswell's products contain no soy, wheat, corn, sugar, or artificial ingredients of any kind. This is especially important for our French bulldog, Pablo, who gets frequent hot spots. We combine a little dry food with a spoonful of wet food. Salmon Stew Adult Dog Food for Pablo and his sensitive tummy, and Chicken Stew Senior Dog for our ten-year-old Shitzu-Poodle mix, Boston, who has put on a few pounds in her later years. We love spoiling our pups with such delicious, healthy, and holistic dog food!
